A tutor is someone who works with a student on a friendly, one-to-one basis with the objective of improving the student’s literacy skills.
Requirements
- The tutor must have patience, a sense of humour and no presentation of superiority
- The tutor must be able to function easily within the English language.
- The tutor must respect the confidentiality of the student
- The tutor must be certified with Laubach Literacy of Ontario.
Responsibilities – To the student
- Be available at time and locations agreeable to both parties and let the student know if changes must be made
- Demonstrate a willingness to commit to regular hours of tutoring
- Prepare lessons and materials ahead of time
- Monitor and record the student’s progress
- Work with the student to achieve their literacy goals
- Use supplemental materials to enhance the students literacy skills
Responsibilities - To the Council
- Report tutoring activities (contact hours, preparation time and progress) on a monthly basis to the Student-Tutor Coordinator
- Attend Literacy Council General Meetings and other Professional Development activities
- Renew annual membership with the Literacy Council
- Provide suggestions and feedback to the Literacy Council

- Our network of experienced volunteers, tutors, students and staff offer support, suggestions and guidance
- Volunteer tutors are certified and recognized in accordance with the standards and guidelines of our Provincial Affiliate - Laubach Literacy of Ontario
- We provide opportunities for ongoing training through conferences and workshops
- We have a well-stocked resource library
- We provide photocopy services
- We distribute a newsletter to our membership
